LOST: "Every Man For Himself" [SPOILERS]
Well, its back to the Hydra again for more fun with Jack, Kate, and Sawyer. We get a few brief glimpses back at the beach as well. Spoilers aplenty to follow.
I must say there's something about the adventures at the Hydra that, well, just aren't "doing it" for me. I don't know if there's a different writing team handling this plotline, or if maybe they're just not sure what they're doing? It just seems a little vague and pointless right now. Hopefully that will change, and we'll all get that "aha!" we're looking for....

I'm Scottish!
Well, so it turns out I'm dead wrong about Desmond's heritage and you guys are right ;D. His accent his just different from what I'm used to hearing from most Scots.
His new superpower comes through again, this time he asks to fix Claire's and Aaron's roof, as he knows somethings going to happen but he really can't explain it. Charlie sort of intercedes and it's just dropped with a few "WTF" looks from Charlie and Claire.
Later we see Des and the new guy, Paulo(?) played by Rodrigo Santoro. Paulo's hitting golf balls into the ocean (um, is anyone going to get those? not like you can just run to the pro shop for more!) and Desmond wants to borrow a club.
We find out why at the end of the episode when he's constructed this tower-looking thing with the club on top and everyone is trying to figure out what it is.
Then the rain starts, and out of nowhere a bolt of lightning strikes Desmond's tower, bringing it crashing down. We're left with a surprised and amused looking Desmond.
I wonder what will ultimately become of this new "power" Desmond seems to have acquired? Surely it will be put to use (good or bad) somewhere down the road.
The "Bunny"
We visit Kate and Sawyer in their cages as a gravely wounded Colleen is rushed past them on a stretcher. Sawyer revels in this, seeing it as a victory for "our team" and an opportunity for a "ticket out."
Kate, however doesn't share his optimistic appraisal of the situation and rails on him for it. Now I would've thought Kate to be a little more "hardcore" than that. At least that's the impression I've always gotten.
We return later to find Sawyer toying around with the food-bearing contraption. He's attempting to rig it up such that he can shock the next "other" who tries to grab him out of there. ("Bet the bears never thought of that!") Kate seems suitably impressed with Sawyer's reasoning skills here.
Along comes none other than Ben, whom Sawyer refers to under his breath as "the big con" (I think?) Ben asks him a bunch of questions like "How much do you weigh" and "how old are you." Sawyer suckers Ben into the water and grabs him, trying to complete the circuit between the electrically-charged "food button" and the puddle.
Nothing happens. Ben (who we assume caught all this on his monitors) has turned off the device. He whips out one of those collapsable police batons and give Sawyer the what-for with it.
Sawyer wakes up strapped to a table, in a room similar to the one Jack is being held in. Ben and Tom are there, along with a couple of armed guards. They cram a stick in his mouth and whip out a big (*really* big) needle. Ben's reaction to this is a curiously-squirmy "I hate needles."
Sawyer starts yelling, and its being piped in static-y bursts to the intercom in Jack's cell. They argue about where to put the needle for a bit, and then ram in on home, where it's an opportune time for one of many ad breaks.
He awakes, still on the table. Ben has a rabbit in a cage, which he starts yelling at and shaking, until it (apparently) keels over. He explains to Sawyer that he's got a pacemaker in his chest, and if his heart rate gets too high it'll cause his heart to explode, just like the rabbit. He threatens to put one in Kate also if Sawyer tells her anything about it.
Time of Death...
Let's take care of the story with Juliet and Jack before we get back to Kate and Sawyer...
So the TV's been left in Jack's cell where he's been watching Looney Tunes for some time it seems. Bob Clampett's "A Corny Concerto" (Yeah I'm a Looney Tunes Nut(tm), sue me!) is playing, notably the segment with the Swan (as in hatch) and the ugly duckling.
Juliet enters, and basically Jack confronts her about the episode where Ben was ready to let her die. Ben bursts in and cries "we have a situation." They both leave Jack wondering what's going on.
Later, Juliet returns wearing bloodied surgical scrubs, and asks for Jacks help. He's paraded out past Kate and Sawyer wearing a hood, and with sirens blaring so nobody can communicate with him. We're never shown, but he's taken to another medical facility. Whether this is another "hatch" or a building or what, we're not shown. We will find out later it's definitely not the medical hatch we saw Claire in....
Jack's briefed and tries unsuccessfully to repair the damage to Colleen. He seems to revert to full doctor mode for a brief moment, saying "time of death" and then realizing there's no clock, and where he is again. We see an angry Mr. Pickett in the observation room.
Jack is cuffed to the OR table, where Ben and Tom agree to leave him be for a while. Juliet comes to talk to him. Turns out she is a fertility doctor (hmm...) not a surgeon, and not used to death. I wonder if their nickname for Colleen, "Cole?" has any significance?
Jack quizzes her on the X-rays that were on the board outside the OR, which he saw on his way in. He offers to help whomever they belong to. And that's the last we see of those two.
Do You Love Him?
Sawyer's brought back to his cage, and Tom brings Kate a fresh set of clothes. Kate asks him to turn around so she can change, and he sort-of does, but manages to catch a peak, sending his heart rate up and causing his monitor-watch to start beeping. "What's that?" "I can't tell you" blah blah. Kate seems to think she can climb out of the top of her cage....
...then Pickett comes. He's furious about Colleen's death and is going to take it out on Sawyer. He's drug out of his cell and knocked around in front of Kate. He asks, "Do you love him?" and eventually(!) she says all boo-hooey "Yes I love him." (big eye roll) and he's tossed back in his cage.
Later, Kate decides it's time to break out, and climbs out of her cage through the top as it starts to rain. Now I've noticed that when it starts raining on the island, bad things tend to happen, so you start wondering....
She tries to break out Sawyer, who tells her to just go. She's confused and all weepy-and-stuff about why didn't he fight back, why he won't go. And drops the bombshell that she only said what she did so Pickett would stop beating him.
(picturing the stereotypical ladies at home watching with tears and hankerchiefs...)
*cough* Anyway. Instead of running, she climbs back into her cage, and gives him the standby line, "live together, die alone."
Alcatraz
It's stopped raining, and Ben comes to get Sawyer to "go for a walk." Long story short, he's marched out for a bit, up a big hill. Part way up, his heart monitor starts going off the scale, and he gets visibly worried.
Ben whips out the rabbit from before, and tells Sawyer he's been conned. There is no "heart exploding pacemaker." That he needed that to keep him in line.
They get to the top of the hill. We're shown (dun dun, DUUUN!) another island not far from where they're at!!! They've been on a separate island this whole time, and the island we're seeing is where our castaways are!
Now, it wasn't made clear if the Other's little village is on this island or not, but it's kind of inferred. Ben makes reference to Alcatraz, which makes me wonder if this island isn't some sort of prison facility? Lots of questions brought up by this, which I'll get to at the end.
Ben tells Sawyer that the only way to gain the respect of a con man is to, in turn, con him. Which he did, and tells Sawyer that "we are better at it."...
Father Knows Best
Now the flashback here was all about Sawyer. Honestly I'm not going to delve into this too deeply, as it was a fairly shallow and not all-that-meaningful one this time around.
Key plot points you need from the flashback: Sawyer was in prison, after the little episode with the woman and the money where he skipped out and left her. He's been there a while. She visits him, and drops the (HUGE) bombshell that he's a baby-daddy. Clementine Philips (name significance unknown yet). He soundly rejects the whole notion of being a daddy, "I don't have a daughter."
He cuts a deal with the warden (or so we think) to con one of the new prisoners into telling him where a cache of stolen money is at, so he can get out. His "commission" on this is to go to an account in his darling Clementine's name. Seems he's getting used to the idea.
Now I suspect the point of this flashback was two-fold: One, to show just how sneaky and "conman"-like he can be. That he'll do just about anything, including the not-so-honorable, to get what he needs. Which in this case, is out of jail. Two, that he's actually a father, that he's gotten used to the idea, and that we'll be revisiting that particular point sometime in the future. I can (almost) guarantee it.
Other than that I don't think it had any more relevance. Maybe I missed something that was key. Just seemed "not that important" when you look at other flashbacks and how they tied into the story and characters in a given episode.
And once again we see more classic literature show up, this time "Of Mice and Men." Which gets quoted by both Sawyer and then Ben on the hill.
But, How, What, When?!
So the big revelation of this episode: The second island. Now there are a few questions that need asking here:
- Is the Others' village on this island or on the castaway's island?
- Michael and Walt took the Others' boat. How are they getting between the two islands without it? Last we saw the boat was at the dock on "our" island. Is there an underground/underwater tunnel or something?
- Is this new island a "prison" for the Others?
Some more questions from this episode:
- What will be the end result of Desmond's new ability?
- Does Kate really love Sawyer?
- Will Jack work on Ben's little spinal tumor issue?
- Do the Others know about Sawyer's daughter and will they use it against him?
- What's the significance of Juliet being a fertility doctor?
- Now that Colleen's dead, will the Others become the "enemy" as was told to Sun?
Next Time
Ah, next time. I think I'll wait and ask the big questions here in a separate post, once I've thought of them all...

I'm trying to recall the book enough to see the significance. I'm afraid I'll have to look it up.
Big dumb guy named Lenny who carries a mouse around in his pocket.
Somebody help us out here.
I say "main" because when the airplane crashed, Ethan and Goodwin were able to run on foot from the villiage to the crash sites.
This also explains how the "others" were able to sneak by Sayid and Jin to get to the boat - they pulled up right along side it!
...and on the sub thing. You know, I thought I heard something like "sub." And I was going "What?" Then they were talking about the sailboat and I thought that's what they might've said. Now the 'sub' thing makes sense. Another nice catch! I'll have to go back and listen to that again....
the two islands. We know the Hydra
is underwater because Jack almost drown
himself and Colleen in the hallway outside
of it.
