"Unlike Me..."

"...many of you have accepted the situation of your imprisonment, and will die here like rotten cabbages."

The Tail Section has a brief but insightful entry comparing LOST to that great cult show, "The Prisoner."
There is much to be said for the genesis of Patrick McGoohan's surreal
little gem.  Taken at its most shallow viewing, 'The Prisoner' is a
unique premise full of mystery, imbued with themes of individualism,
and the spontaneous regimentation we suffer by merely 'participating'
in a society,  no matter how 'free' we perceive ourselves.
Read the rest of this and contemplate.  I think it might be reaching a little far to claim that "Expose" was just LOST thumbing its nose at the rest of primetime television.  Why would they need to do that?  Seems a little too "serious of itself" for the show.

From what I understand about McGoohan, the stated situation with "The Prisoner" seems perfectly acceptable, and makes perfect sense....

We know that C&D can get light hearted, as we saw with "Tricia Tanaka" and the other Hurley episodes, but to say they used this one episode to make some kind of point seems a touch too far.

Although it would be a cool nod to have the show end on a similar note to "The Prisoner", and I won't spoil it here for those who haven't seen it.  It would probably fit with the LOST mythology quite nicely.

And if the smoke monster turns into a big white bouncy ball and starts eating people I'm done! :-)

LOST: "Expose" [SPOILERS]

That's "Expozay" with the little accented e, which I'm not going to hunt for the right character code for at the moment!

I'm going to forget about the usual "recap" format for this episode.  Quite frankly I don't think it deserves it.  Sorry, guys, this was kind of lame.  Although we did bring a quick close to "The Tale of Nikki and Paulo."  Thank God.

This was more of a "Clue" mystery story, and quite honestly I don't think we learned anything new about the island.  Well, maybe one or two minor things, but that'd be about it.

Here's the short (well shorter than usual!) version, and really its about all you need to know.

What's In A Name?

Quite a bit when you're talking about LOST!

This article over at USAToday is a look into the names of some of the characters and the philosophers that spawned the names.  There are some interesting parallels going on here.

Like this:

Philosopher:  John Locke (1632-1704), English philosopher of the Enlightenment Era.

â?¢Differs from Lost's Locke by favoring reason in the search for truth and championing science.

â?¢Believed the mind starts as tabula rasa, or blank slate, and learns through experience.

Expert comment: The philosopher saw humans starting in a state of nature â?? the crash survivors â?? and moving toward some kind of social contract, as the people on the beach have, says David Thomer, who teaches philosophy at La Salle University. His belief that action is based on experiences fits in with Lost's signature flashbacks: "What the creators are doing here is trying to show you the particular experiences that are motivating the characters."

We've seen time and again John going through some rather dubious circumstances, usually of his own making.  We also see that he's been given the proverbial "blank slate", and how he's the one learning all about the island through his experiences.  brilliant stuff.

Open That Door, Richard

In one of those "just popped into my head" moments while thinking about the submarine, I had this strange thought.

Is the mysterious "Richard" Ben's "magic box?"

Twice now we've seen him "deliver" for the "Others."  We saw Ben directly ask him to "bring me the man from Tallahassee" and lo-and-behold, Locke's father appears on the island.

But, if you remember the first time we saw him, he was trying to recruit Juliet for Mittelos bioscience, and she mentions she'd like to see her ex "hit by a bus."  A short time later that exact scenario mysteriously happens.

Coincidence that he's around both times?  I'm betting no.  He's got to be somehow involved in this wild and crazy "genie in a bottle" theory they threw at us.  He even looks the part sort of....

Wonder when the next time we'll see him will be.

Ooooh. Here's another strange theory.  What if Richard is somehow able to travel back and forth in time like Desmond?  And with this ability he was able to "arrange" for these things to happen.  Maybe we'll see a "temporal battle" between the two?

Look Ahead to Expose and More

...from the Almighty Doc Jensen.

Lots of good stuff about what we might expect from tonights episode, which will focus on the suddenly-important-for-some-reason Nikki and Paulo.

Looks like even though we'll focus on these two third-string benchwarmers, there'll be lots of other juicy info and details dropped.  Sounds like surprises are in order.

And he answers some questions (sort of), including this one, which I hadn't really thought about...
When Locke was walking away from the submarine last week, he appeared to be soaking wet, despite the fact that we never saw him get into the water. This has led to speculation among fans that Locke didn't actually blow up the sub, but instead, took it out to sea, submerged it, and blew up the dock â?? all part of a plan to make it appear the submarine was destroyed. The question is this: Are we supposed to be wondering why John Locke was all wet? Intriguingly, Damon Lindelof says: ''No comment.''
(There were a lot of C&D "Maybe's" and "No Comments" here....)

I thought he was just wet because he maybe places the charge somewhere on the outside, or in the ballasts, or something... That's an interesting little sub-theory right there....

And be sure to read all the way down for his latest theorization.

January?! Noooo!

There are rumors floating about that season four will not start up until January of '08, which would mean a very long hiatus once season three ends here in what, May?

That's too long!  You'll probably lose some of the more casual viewers who won't realize it's coming back!
Naveen Andrews, who plays Sayid on ABC's hit series Lost, told SCI FI Wire that he believes the network may be mulling a later start for the upcoming fourth season, which would begin in January and run straight without a break, a la Fox's 24. "I believe that's the plan," Andrews said in an interview....

Heart of Darkness?

Ha! Got you thinking there, didn't I?  Here's a swell piece about John Locke, aka Terry O'Quinn and his character.  I'm sure you've heard already that we won't be seeing Locke again until the season finale (boo! hiss!) which totally sucks because he is at the center of things!
IN the last two episodes of "Lost," John Locke told a few lies, killed an "Other," blew up a hatch full of communication devices and then set off more explosives in the Others' submarine to prevent anyone from leaving or arriving on the island. It's a far cry from the weeks he spent in a hole in the ground last season, punching computer buttons, only to emerge feeling like he wasted his time.
At least our islanders aren't hearing old Dylan songs in their head! (If you have seen BSG's finale yet! WTF was that?)

Kristin's Locke Redux

A short spoilerific recap of MFT!  Of course you read it here already, albeit the long version, right? ;-)
And the Emmy Goes To:  Locke may not be a master of Stratergery, but holy crap, can Terry O'Quinn act or what? Honestly, I would pay huge sums of money to see the show where Michael Emerson and Terry O'Quinn sit together in a black-box theater, saying nothing with words and everything with their faces. Stellar.
And I have to agree completely with that statement...

Naveen Andrews

Nothing too stellar here, but a brief glimpse into "Sayid" and what else he's up to, including the typically strange Tarantino-Rodriguez "Grindhouse."
J.J. is promising a bigger ending this year than last year. Have you seen anything?

Naveen Andrews: It's like magicians, isn't it? 'For my next trick...' I hope so, bigger and better; that would be nice.
And a bit more about working with Abrams

Ben's Star Chart

Ben, Ben, Ben.  To keep the trend going...  Well, it would seem that there are a couple of glitches with the map hanging on Ben's bedroom wall, seen here:

Now, after doing a bit of digging, it would seem that this is not a traditional "star chart", but rather a "map of the universe", and on top of that, its for the northern hemisphere, AND its rotated 90 degrees counter clockwise.  What's up with that?!

Here's an image which is similar, and if you do the transformations as above, voila! There it is!

What's this mean? I don't know.

[EDIT: Looks like there are other versions of this map that are actually rotated the same way as Ben's... I'll keep digging up info!]
