LOST: "Through The Looking Glass" Comments [SPOILERS]

Dude!  I'm not even sure where to begin.  The implications, the humanity, the horror of it all!

I suggest reading the recap if you've not already, because I'm going to touch on a lot.  Starting with the three deaths we were warned about....

LOST: "Through the Looking Glass" Recap [SPOILERS!]

Well you've seen my reaction already! :-) But man, what a trip. It's unfortunate and a little upsetting that they did feel the need to off somebody they've spent time developing....

But the biggest questions of all came out of the flashback... or should I say, well, read on for the spoilerific recap. And it's going to be a long one, folks.

Content to be LOST?

Thanks to Sarah for pointing me to an article over at Salon, called "Tease Me."

I also have to agree. :)  I think one of the biggest draws is the fact that it both unfolds and evolves in such a way that no matter how many questions or intricacies get resolved, there will be new enigmas waiting around every bend.

To those who feel that the show's occult scenario should, by now, be fully explicated, I cite the sad example of "Twin Peaks," which initially maintained a seductive aura of infinite strangeness. Remember how unexciting it was to learn, in the show's second season, that Laura Palmer was murdered by her father? (He was tormented by having perpetrated incest.) Suddenly, "Twin Peaks" seemed not much different than "All My Children," and the show imploded. The pleasure of a mystery plot, it turns out, lies almost entirely in anticipatory speculation. If "Lost" were to give away the island's secrets too soon, it would devolve into a lushly landscaped action movie.

I almost hate to admit it, but I never watched a single episode of Twin Peaks.  Maybe I should!

The journey is where the fun is, folks!  Too bad we're going to be on hiatus for so bloody long after tonight!!! :-(

What's The Twist This Time?

So, given how the last two seasons have ended, once with Locke opening the hatch and seeing the ladder, and last year's mind blower with Penny and her frozen scientist guys...

What do you all think the big "WTF" cliffhanger will be this time in Through The Looking Glass?  What sort of clues will they drop at us that'll leave us scratching our heads, like the four-toed statue foot of last season's finale.

Quite honestly I can't even begin to imagine.  Maybe DHARMA will show up to ruin the party, now that the Flame station is gone.  Does Jacob show up in the flesh to stop the war?  Will Michael and/or Walt come back to the island?  (Consider their roles in each of the previous finales.)

I'll ask the same question tomorrow, as far as what the season four premiere might entail.... Think "inside the hatch" premiere and the "Downtown" opener to season three....

Talk it up!

Slaughterhouse LOST?

Hm.  The first thing that popped into my head after reading C&D's comment in the ABC interview...
"Somewhere just outside the Crab Nebula is where it will all end, geographically," he said.
... was WTF?!  Then I got to thinking, what the heck could they be talking about? Then I remembered some movie where a time-travelling dude was being held prisoner by aliens in some strange dome-like enclosure somewhere in outer space....

And I remembered.  Slaughterhouse-Five.

Dang.  Is LOST a re-write of Vonnegut's famous novel?  Or at least heavily influenced by it?  The plot synopsis from Wikipedia is compelling.  I can't recall ever reading the book, but I know I've seen the film at least a couple of times (although the plot escapes me)... but check this point out from WP....
A disoriented and ill-trained American soldier named Billy Pilgrim is captured by German soldiers and is forced to live in a makeshift prison, the deep cellars of a disused slaughterhouse in the city of Dresden,
Germany. Billy has become "unstuck in time" for unexplained reasons
(though it's hinted towards the end that his surviving a plane crash
left him with mild
brain damage) so he randomly and repeatedly visits different parts of his life, including his death. He meets, and is later kidnapped by, aliens from the planet Tralfamadore, who exhibit him in a Tralfamadorian zoo with Montana Wildhack, a pornographic movie star. The Tralfamadorians see in four dimensions,
the fourth dimension being time. Tralfamadorians have seen every
instant of their lives already; they cannot choose to change anything
about their fate, but can choose to focus on any moment in their lives
that they wish.

[Emphasis mine]  OK, so throw out the part about the porn star (although C&D really should find a way to write that in!) and the bit about the Germans and WWII....

Whoa!

It's clear we don't have one "Billy Pilgrim" among the group of 815 survivors, but taken as a whole we see one theme overarching everything.  That being the flashbacks and how events in our characters lives have inevitably brought them to where they are today.

And then there's Desmond, his "guardian angels", and his ability to go back to previous events in his life, and to see the future....

Is the island in fact nothing more than the "zoo" that Billy Pilgrim is set up as an exhibit in?  Is Jacob one of the zookeepers? Are the Mt. Moriah monk and Ms. Hawkins in on it too?

Consider the last two and their take on "free will" and how it relates to Desmond, and indirectly everybody else.

Man, that's just nuts.  I'm sure this has been discussed at length and in more detail before, but I just made the connection, so... Man.  That's just nuts.

(And now that I think about it, the computer-room "dome" inside the Swan had a striking resemblance to the outer-space structure Billy keeps returning to in the movie....)

Answers Promised! But Not Yet...

Argh, straight from ABC Damon and Carlton give a bizarre little interview talking about how the show has evolved into what it is today.
"We sort of see each season as a book, and we're going to be concluding this book of 'Lost,'" co-executive producer Carlton Cuse said during a break from editing the third season's final episode. "The finale promises a showdown between our guys and the Others, and we really deliver on that."
Quite honestly I expect this season to end like the previous two.  A whole bunch of "WTF was that?!" (think statue, hatch, others, the pearl notes piled up) and not a lot of answers to go around.  Are we going to put a close to the "Others Chapter" much like last season closed the "Swan Hatch" chapter?  Wonder whats next then!?

And they end with this...very strange quip.  Grain of salt mandatory I thinks.
"Somewhere just outside the Crab Nebula is where it will all end, geographically," he said.
WHAT?

Um. Yeah.
