Through The Looking-Glass, Influences? Pt. II
(OK, so we learned from "Greatest Hits" that "The Looking Glass" isn't merely the title of the finale, its really a new DHARMA Station! Drat! I was hoping for something a little more esoteric than all that, and I wrote this before that episode! So, keep that in mind!
)
Surely you've read the intro to this series by now, so you know what we're doing here....
I'll call this installment, "The Crow".... Here's what I mean:

LOST: "Greatest Hits" First Impressions! [SPOILERS]
Another new kind of post, hey I gotta yell on this one. If you've still not watched (you DVR folks!) then spoilers will follow after the break...
But whoa! I feel like we just got seriously set up for the finale. And the title of the finale makes a lot more sense. A *lot*. I may have to forego the whole 'Alice' series now that we know what it means. Or do we?

LOST-alike Jericho Cancelled
Looks like CBS's half-hearted attempt at a LOST-like serial drama is no more.
Truthfully I think is a good thing. Jericho could have worked. Problem is they had no direction until right at the end, just when it started getting good! I was getting Others deja-vu when the war with Newberg started!
On the other hand they started going to blatant LOST-isms like flashbacks and even so far as to copy the unmistakable LOST *BONK*.... and going to the mid-season break format so many other shows are doing, LOST included. (Well, not any more!)
Killing off one of the most-likable and arguably main characters didn't exactly help either I think. It was a valiant effort, though!
Can LOST's "format" (if there is such a thing) be copied? Is it a jewel unto itself? I'm only just now starting to watch Heroes, the "other" LOST-alike, and really can't get into it as much.

My Hero!
Doc lets it all hang out this time... and lets slip a couple of near-spoilers regarding "Greatest Hits." Now, I don't consider this to be real spoiler material, as nothing concrete gets spilled....
Is Charlie gonna finally succumb to fate? I've purposely not gone a-spoiler-seekin for these last two, just because (from all the buzz) it sounds like too much is spelled out. On the other hand, it seems to be an all-or-nothing deal with respect to season three's final two episodes. Either you know nothing, or you know everything! So I'm going the "I know nothing!" route, in case you were wondering where the "Look Ahead" posts are....
I also gotta stand up and applaud the Doc on his viewpoint regarding LOST and the analysis nay-sayers. I got a couple comments on the "Alice" post from yesterday, and I think what the Doc says sums it up best for me too!

Tonight, you will visit a new Dharma station. You will see the*Drool* New DHARMA Station! Rock on! Does anyone have any speculation on what it might entail? This sounds like it might come "out of the blue" and I can't imagine they'd do anything else but set up things for next season with it... but still. Wooo!
terrifying revival of Jack, Bad-ass King of the Castaways. You will see Charlie â?? destined-to-die ex-druggie; happily reconstructed one-hit-wonder rocker; Claire-smitten surrogate Aaron daddy â?? make an extraordinarily courageous choice that in many ways sums up what Lost is all about for me. So perhaps we can let those bits stand as a tantalizing preview.

What's so awesome about this show is that it's one seriously big-assThat's what I'm talking about!
tent of madcap mental fun â?? and I want to revel in it all! Moreover, we're talking about a show that namechecks John Locke, David Hume, and Mikhail frakkin' Bakunin. Do I think the producers are seriously inviting debate of philosophical ideas? YES! Do I think it's necessary to do hours and hours of homework in order to understand the show? Heavenly sunshine, NO! A thousand times: NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! I've always believed that all you need to understand Lost is the show itself and nothing more. But the AWESOME beauty of the show is that if you WANT something more out of the show, it's there, in the subtext, waiting to be mined, refined, and shared. Now, I'm not always right in identifying the gems in Lost's subtextual soil â?? but the digging and the finding is part of the fun, too. And that's what Doc Jensen is all about: Fun. But fun can be smart, or pseudo-smart, or just plain pseudo.

Was Locke's Shooting a Ratings Gimmick?
Discuss!
Seriously, if they're going where I think they're going with this, it fits perfectly with the story, and Ben's not going to like it!
Oh and BTW, there'll be no earth-shattering finale spoilers here! :) Only rampant speculation and lame fanboy literature discussions! At least until after the fact!

Critics and fans suspect the show's producers decided to put Locke's life in jeopardy during the last episode because the show's ratings have been plummeting. Last week 12.1 million viewers tuned into "Lost," but the number is small when compared to the amount of people who watched the program last season - at its peak, there were 22 million-plus viewers.Whoa! Back up the bus! I don't recall anyone saying that Locke taking one in the gut was nothing but a ratings ploy! Maybe I missed that memo!

Through The Looking-Glass, The Book Pt. I
Having just re-read Lewis Carroll's fantastic story "Through the Looking-Glass", in anticipation of the LOST season 3 finale... All I can say is, in the words of Hurley, "DUDE!"
If you've never read it, the short version is this: Alice finds herself wishing she could visit the room in "Looking-Glass House," that is to say the room she sees in the mirror. And sure enough, she does just that. From there she pulls a Jules and walks the earth, meets people (well, sort of), gets in adventures, that sort of thing.
The kicker, is that some of the adventures she gets into, and the conversations she has can seem to be pretty familiar with respect to what is going on in the world of LOST at the moment. Hey, I'm not the one naming season finales after this book, so bear with me.

LOST: "The Man Behind The Curtain" Analysis and Comments
I think it goes without saying that there will be major spoilers ahead.
They really outdid themselves this time. I only hope the next two aren't a letdown after that.
We learned a lot this episode. Ben's origin, "The Purge", the identity of poor "Roger the workman", and we pay a visit to the mysterious Jacob. Sort of.
