That's "Expozay" with the little accented e, which I'm not going to hunt for the right character code for at the moment!
I'm going to forget about the usual "recap" format for this episode. Quite frankly I don't think it deserves it. Sorry, guys, this was kind of lame. Although we did bring a quick close to "The Tale of Nikki and Paulo." Thank God.
This was more of a "Clue" mystery story, and quite honestly I don't think we learned anything new about the island. Well, maybe one or two minor things, but that'd be about it.
Here's the short (well shorter than usual!) version, and really its about all you need to know.
Nikki and Paulo were con artists (Sawyer would've been proud, and I think he was kind of) who had ripped off and murdered a film director in Sydney. They stole a Russian "nesting doll" (yes I know they have a name but it escapes me) with a little baggie of diamonds.
During the crash the bag with the rocks went missing. They have been trying to find it, but Paulo it seems found it first, and hid it from Nikki. He did it to try and bring them closer together, because if she knew, she wouldn't need him anymore. Which was ultimately the case.
The episode starts with Nikki bailing out of the jungle and collapsing, apparently dead in front of Hurley and Sawyer, who get the "gang" together to solve the mystery. They discover an equally apparently dead Paulo, and the fun begins.
Then it bounces back and forth between N&P's search for the diamonds since the plane crash and Scooby and the gang solving the mystery.
Here's the big Twilight Zone twist to the whole N&P story. Once Nikki discovers that Paulo found the diamonds, she throws one of the late Dr. Artz's "Medusa spiders" at Paulo, which puts him into a near-death paralyzed state. Of course she forgets what the good Doc said, and all the other spiders come a-runnin, and she gets bitten also.
They have a little funeral for the two and end up burying them alive.
Now, that's the short and sweet version. Here are the couple of killer facts we found out, that might make a difference down the road.
First, its revealed who was behind Sun's attempted kidnapping so long ago. It was Charlie, who was teaming with Sawyer to steal the guns (remember that one? Yeah, just barely...) Sun is now on the warpath with Sawyer, and thats about as far as it went, this time anyway.
Next, we discover that N&P had already discovered Yemmi's crashed plane, AND they had found the Pearl Station! Before Locke! Zoiks! Paulo even uses the toilet in the station to stash the diamonds for a brief period, and recovers them when he and Locke's gang go in there.
Probably the most interesting part of the episode, though, was when he was down there stashing the diamonds in the first place. Ben and Juliet walk in, and are watching the Swan Hatch on the camera. They discuss "Shepard" and how Ben is going to manipulate him into performing the surgery, and how that's going to happen. Of course we already knew all this so there's no big revelations, just a sort of "Here's what happened" kind of thing.
As they're leaving Juliet remarks, "This place gives me the creeps." Which is about the most remarkable comment in the entire episode. Why? Did something happen in there that we should know about?
One of them (can't recall) leaves a GPRS radio behind, and Paulo picks it up. Sawyer later finds it in their stuff, and thinks they are working with the Others. I'm betting we see this radio again. Otherwise what's the point. Of course that's what I was thinking throughout this anyway.
Sure there were some humorous moments ("And who the hell are you, anyway!?") and lots of tongue-in-cheek poking at us fans ("Dude! It was the monster!") and in the end.... Well, I can't really say I'm sorry to see them go.
If they're really gone at all. Sure they were buried alive. Maybe they dig their way out and find their way back, or even back to the Others. Maybe they turn into brain-eating zombies and munch on the flesh of our castaways! Bah.
Conclusions- N&P were con artists, and in the end got theirs. The End.
- Paulo found the plane and the Pearl first. But didn't really mean anything.
- Ben and Juliet knew about the Pearl, and quite obviously the plane. So?
- The Pearl creeps Juliet out. Why?
- And the radio, what use will it be in the future.
- Will we see N&P again?
I don't know, I'm still scratching my head about this one. Quite frankly I didn't see the point, except to get rid of N&P. It was a departure from the usual "format", which I suppose might be a precursor, maybe they want to mix it up a bit. It didn't work for me, though.
Next Time... CATFIGHT! Um, hopefully it goes better than this one!

The opening scene, which I initially despised in-toto, can be seen as a simile for the entire episode.
Isn't this the same plane that Nikki and Paolo see and the one that Boone died in? I think it was in a Doc Jensen article where he says something to the effect of "Locke served Boone up to the island". Wouldn't this contradict that theory. That whole conversation could've been irrelevant but they mention covering up the hatch with the plane. Ben could've just said cover it up. But that makes me wonder if the "Others" pushed the plane over while Boone was inside?
Also, I think that Tom was the one who left the radio. They don't show either Ben or Juliet with a radio in hand as they walk toward the TVs.
