What Made Rousseau Different?

OK, so after last night's revelation that pregnant women on the island will just up and die unless given Juliet's magic serum...

...why did Rousseau survive?  I believe the story was that Alex was born after her arrival.  She should have perished, and Alex should never have been born.

Theory 1: Something happened on the island to change things.  Possibly the "incident" recorded on the blast door map?  Something else entirely?

Theory 2: She was at one point abducted or taken in by The Others/DHARMA and given an older vaccine.  This would have to be a different vaccine as Juliet hadn't arrived on the island yet.  Doesn't really make sense.

Theory 3: Alex was conceived on the island?  Maybe that makes a difference?  We know that Ben claims to have been on the island "all his life."  In that case either Alex is the daughter of one of the passed-on members of Rousseau's expedition, or she is in fact Ben's daughter, and this whole "daddy" thing is in fact true.

Theory 4: Mix Theories 1 and 3 and shake vigorously.  Add olives and/or lemon to taste.

Sound plausible?  Any other opinions on what could be going on?

Well, obviously what the island does to the Others is not the same as what it does to "guests" - witness Ben's cancer vs. Rose's condition or Locke's paralysis.

So it's only pregnant Others that have the certain death sentence.

Hm, good point. I thought from 'one of us' that is was pretty clear Claire was going to suffer the same fate, hence the need for the injections, both at the beach this time, at the 'Staff Hatch' during her abduction, and IIRC didn't Desmond (or ?) get her a case of vaccine off of the air drop?

The "implant" seemed like a good ruse to get her to get sick for Juliet's "visit", to make her look good and all, but to me it all didn't fit together.

Still think something is up there. :-)

(Also still doesn't explain Ben, if he's telling the truth and if he really was born on the island....)

I've thought all along that maybe Rousseau was maybe an Other...and just deviated, or perhaps she did come after, but...I do think Ben is really Alex's father, just a hunch, anyway it makes things more interesting...lol

If Juliet's serum given to Claire was just a ruse to get Juliet accepted into the crowd at the beach, how do we know that any of what was said about Claire is true? All we know from Juliet talking to Ben, Goodwin and Ethan is that there is a problem with conception on the island and that women who conceive on the island die in childbirth. Rousseau and Aaron (and possibly Ben) were conceived off island.

Everything Juliet said about Claire's pregnancy and Ethan's treatments is suspect.

OR...Ben is lying! (The evil, evil, albiet brilliant man) Ben is not Alex's father, and perhaps Rousseau was telling the truth and the Others took her baby.

OK, call that #5 :-) I think C&D are going out of their way to show that Ben is a man of his word, at least in a 'to-the-letter' sense of it. Doesn't mean he's not lying about certain things, just that when he actually gives his word it seems to be legit. So far.

Maybe I'm confused on the exact details surrounding Claire and Aaron, but regardless of the Others' actions and motives, in any case they gave Claire the vaccine in order to keep her alive, or so it would seem. I still think there is more to this....
