2010: A LOST Odyssey

Well, I guess its now official.  LOST will come to its conclusion in 2010 after three more seasons, albeit only of 16 episodes each!  This means there will be an unholy eight month period of downtime inbetween runs of new episodes!  Nooooo!
In a highly unusual move, the network announces plans today to end the
show after three more shortened seasons of 16 episodes each. The
episodes will air consecutively, repeat-free, from February to May.
I guess it was inevitable, they've been talking about the show having a defined end point for a while now.  Too bad they can't see fit to fill out those seasons a bit more.

FTA:
Shorter seasons will allow plots to be more tightly constructed and
"will make it a real event," Lindelof says. "We won't have to do
episodes where people are standing on the beach looking at the water
and wondering what's going to happen next."
And this curious little tidbit:
But, Lindelof says, "the last five minutes of (this month's) finale are going to seal our fate."
Heh, I can't wait to see what that entails.  Hopefully it isn't something so outrageous as to make us all throw up our collective hands and go "Aw! Yeah, right! I give up!" or something.  Like this season's "24" did!

Wonder if they'll actually close up the story in 2010 or leave it open "X-Files" style for the possibility of a big screen endeavor?

I think the real problem with the schedule has been inconsistency. That's a problem because the show has such a strong narrative, as opposed to an anthology.

I wish they would go to an "every other week format" like L&O did for D'Onofrio. Find another show of similar tone for the alternate weeks, or even use that crappy "About Jim".

The actors get paid by the episode, right? So this means a yearly pay-cut for the cast and crew?

It is my thoughts that this could be a reason for the rumored death's this season. As part of these negotiations, they were trying to lock in the actors to the end of the series. Those that they could not get to agree to terms and time were "let go" this season so that it would not screw up the overall plan for the remainder of the series. This likely has been in the works for some time. They leaked the about the show negotiations some time ago but I suspect it was pretty much a done deal at that time. They are not just tidying up things to make way for the remainder of the episodes to play out according to their script.
