Was Locke's Shooting a Ratings Gimmick?

Critics and fans suspect the show's producers decided to put Locke's life in jeopardy during the last episode because the show's ratings have been plummeting. Last week 12.1 million viewers tuned into "Lost," but the number is small when compared to the amount of people who watched the program last season - at its peak, there were 22 million-plus viewers.
Whoa! Back up the bus! I don't recall anyone saying that Locke taking one in the gut was nothing but a ratings ploy!  Maybe I missed that memo!

Seriously, if they're going where I think they're going with this, it fits perfectly with the story, and Ben's not going to like it!

Oh and BTW, there'll be no earth-shattering finale spoilers here! :)  Only rampant speculation and lame fanboy literature discussions!  At least until after the fact!
