LOST: "The Beginning of the End" [ANALYSIS]
Well, what a mind blower! Let's just get down to it, shall we? There's really not a lot to cover actually, but what there is has some big implications for the future. Both on and off the island!
The Beginning of the End
The title of the episode comes from Ben's warning as he's tied to the tree in "Through the Looking Glass." That the arrival of the freighter and its crew would result in the demise of all those who remain on the island. But is that indeed the case? According to Hurley's mysterious visit in the asylum, Mr. Abaddon, they are still alive. We can only assume that he means those they left behind.
I predict that Ben will lose his position as Jacob's favorite to Locke, and that things will transpire quite differently than Ben thinks.
The title also has a dual meaning. While it probably is the beginning of the end for life on the island as we've come to know it, it also stands to reason that what we saw is the beginning of the end for events in the future. It looks like events here will start the chain that brings Jack to his meltdown and the conclusion that they need to return to the island.
Now, think ahead three years to the show's end. Will the end be that return to the island?
Sister?
So, Naomi has a sister. Here's my prediction: Naomi is Penny's half-sister. Ooooh, I can feel the daggers from here. How else can you explain her having that photograph of Desmond and Penny? I know, its a long shot. But that little tidbit wouldn't have been tossed out if it wasn't relevant.
The Visitor
But who might this Abaddon actually be? Is he DHARMA? Is he some strange time traveling angel like Hawkins and the Friar? His appearance was too brief to say for sure. Maybe we'll see some more of him later? (or previous?)
Hurley, Locke, and Jacob
Now, this is the part that blew me away the most. Hurley's cries for help, were they "answered" by the mysterious Jacob? He was given a rare glimpse into "the house", which was only given previously to Locke (by invitation) by Ben. Further, did Jacob tell Locke where to find Hurley? How does all that play together?
More importantly, did Hurley's decision that they needed to stay on the island have anything to do with Jacob's apparent newfound interest in him? Makes you wonder, doesn't it? Will we be seeing more of this direct influence from Jacob?
More Sky Divers
And we also get a brief glimpse at the new guy from the freighter. Very brief. Which character is this guy? (I forget!) I'm thinking its not Minkowski, though.
Charlie's Ghost
Ah, and what of this little conundrum. Is Charlie really, truly, dead? According to the future ghost-Charlie, that'd be yes, he is. Is he really appearing to Hurley, though, or is this a Dave-like figment of his imagination? Is it Jacob and/or the island calling to Hurley from afar? What a turn of events. There's more to this than we can even guess at this point.
The Oceanic Six
OK, so we know now that only six return from the island. And they're all Cylons. Wait, no, that's not right.
We know that Jack, Kate, and now Hurley return. Who else? And if Hurley was so adamant about not leaving for Charlie's sake, why did he change his mind? Did he want to leave or was he forced/tricked into leaving?
It's probably not Ben, which would rule him out as being in the coffin. Probably not Locke, again, rules him out of the box. No doubt Sawyer is one of them, but you never can tell. Claire and Aaron?
I predict that we'll be losing more main characters to the grim reaper in order to whittle down the possible answers here.
Tell what?
Anyone care to throw out a guess as to what Jack and Hurley's big secret is? Not me, not at this stage anyway.
Answers
You know, I can't say there really were any answers given this time around. Except for knowing how many return to civilization from the island, which really isn't much of an answer to anything.
Unlike previous premieres where we learn what's in the hatch, or where the Others live and who they are.... We are only presented with a foggy picture full of half-questions and new mysteries! Way to reel us in guys! :) We've been set up I think for a major shift in the show.

Jack and Claire have no idea they're related. It's quite possible Naomi's aware of it but Penny is not. There are of course countless other explanations but I'm sticking with this one until I'm (very likely!) proven wrong!
Also another little tidbit here I got from the SPOILER according to future episodes there are flash forwards for Sayid, Jin and Sun (and baby) and we already KNOW Jack, Kate and Hurley get off the island. So...is that our six??? UGH!!! Only 7 more episodes then we have to wait a WHOLE YEAR...OH the agony!!!!
