LOST: "Confirmed Dead" [RECAP]
Weeellll, what an odd episode "Confirmed Dead" turned out to be! Not one, but five (six?) flashbacks, all related to our new characters, the team from the freighter. There's plenty to talk about in the analysis thread (coming a bit later) but here's the recap!
I guess the only good way to do it this time, is to just run it down like it played out, since all the different flashbacks intertwined with the story on the island... not so easy to break out the different stories this time.
I guess the only good way to do it this time, is to just run it down like it played out, since all the different flashbacks intertwined with the story on the island... not so easy to break out the different stories this time.
Red Rover
The show starts off in a manner we don't usually see... some static, and some guys talking. Then it becomes clear what they're doing, they've got a pair of undersea ROVs and their searching for something. I don't think they're looking for the airplane, but lo and behold, thats exactly what they find. Oceanic 815. At least that's what it looks like. The plane looks like its all in one piece (well, more or less) even. Not like we saw the real 815 split in two.
We also get a closer fix on where the island might be, as the next shot is of a newscast, with a big X somewhere west of Indonesia. Which means they were either way off course, or someone's trying to pull a fast one.
The next shot is of the new guy, we don't know his name yet (well, on the show) but this is Daniel Faraday. He's sitting on the couch, crying at this newscast. "Why are you so upset?" "I don't know," he says.
Back to the island, and on board the helicopter he and his team jumped out of. It's going nuts, and chaos ensues. He jumps out and we get a first person view of his trip to the ground. He lands, and somewhat panics, getting out his .45 and putting one in the chamber. From there the paths of Faraday and Jack and Kate meet as we saw at the end of last week's episode. "Are you Jack?" "I'm here to rescue you!" (Aren't you a little short... ah never mind!)
Well, Faraday tells Jack and Kate there were four of them on the chopper, and Jack gives him Naomi's phone to call the boat. There's some sort of secret conversation between Faraday and Minkowski (heh) and then Faraday explains how they can use the phone to find the rest of his gang.
Orders
The next scene starts with a great shot of Locke holding his face up into the rain with a big grin on his face. Hurley approaches, "dude what's wrong with you, you're gonna get struck by lightning." Locke replies, "The storm's about to pass" and it stops raining.
As it turns out, they're taking a bit of a detour to the barracks, and are going to find Jacob's cabin. "But I thought the cabin was that way," pipes up Hurley, visibly surprising Locke. "What did you say, Hugo?" and grins.
"Why are we going to the cabin?" "Because we're supposed to" "Like you were supposed to kill Naomi?" "Uh-huh" Locke says matter-of-factly.
"Where are you getting your orders from, Col. Kurtz." (A reference to Apocalypse Now in case you were wondering. Interesting....) "From Walt." and Locke explains to the stunned group about how he was taller and all that. I guess it had to come out sometime. He explains how he was shot and that he'd probably be dead if he still had a kidney there. Another great coincidence. Or is it?
There's a brief interlude with Sayid and Juliet watching the horizon for the freighter. They talk about why Ben would say that they're here to hurt us... "How many guns do you have left?" she asks him.
Back to Faraday, Jack, and Kate. They're tracking one of the signals on the phone, and run across a metal case that they'd thrown from the helicopter. It's full of gas masks and biohazard bags. Faraday starts to flounder and gets really nervous. "Why'd you bring the gun?" "Precaution." "Against what?" He gets more nervous and stammering. They get a solid lock on one of the signals. "Miles!" Faraday yells.
They track the signal to the volcanic rock formation, Miles Strom is there, apparently unconscious. Jack pulls his helmet off and Miles jumps to his feet waving his gun around. Faraday tries to talk him down but Miles is going on about "Where's Naomi!"
Ah, and then we get to Miles' flashback. He's paying a visit to some older lady, and to make a long story short, it would seem he's some sort of psychic. (What was up with the converted dustbuster anyway? Don't cross the streams?) He talks to her dead grandson's ghost and finds a stash o' cash in a hole in the wall. From this little episode it's clear that Miles has a crooked streak to him. Keep your eyes open.
Back on the island, Faraday is still trying to talk Miles down. Sigh. We learn that the whole "sister" thing from Naomi was simply a duress code. (Blew that one, didn't I!) Kate tells him that Locke killed her and they'll take him to the body.
Ben, Ben, Ben.
And well, Locke's merry band is taking five at the river. Ben, who doesn't know when to quit apparently, starts pushing on Karl, who goes to smack him. Sawyer talks him out of it, and then Ben starts in on Sawyer. Well, that was obviously a bad choice as Sawyer finishes what Karl was going to start.
Locke tells Sawyer "maybe we should execute him in front of his daughter?" A sentiment which is all too familiar to Sawyer, and he backs down, but tells Locke that Ben is his problem now.
Jack and company find Naomi's body, and we see Miles apparently doing his psychic thing. Faraday starts mumbling something about the light not scattering right through the trees. (Again, nice touch. Physics in-jokes.) Jack hears something in the brush.
Miles confirms Kate's story, and seems to back off of them. Jack tells them to hand over their guns. "How stupid do you think I am?" Miles says. And Sayid and Juliet come out of the trees with their weapons drawn. "I dunno Miles, how stupid are you?" Ah, the tables turn!
Raiders of the Lost Bears
From there we're tossed around the world into the desert of Tunisia, to an archaeological dig. Charlotte buys her way into the site, where there is a polar bear skeleton in the sand. She digs a little further and pulls out a DHARMA Hydra station emblazoned collar.... and smiles wide.
We find her on the island, hanging upside down over the river by her chute. She cuts herself loose and lands in the water, laughing almost hysterically. She looks at the bank to see none other than Locke. "Hi!" "Hi yourself."
Sayid is trailing the now captive Miles and Faraday as they hike to find the rest of the rescuers. "You don't act surprised to see us if we're all supposed to be dead."
Charlotte is apparently in heaven and is enthusiastically asking all sorts of questions about everything. Hurley starts to spill the beans but Locke stops him. Locke decides instead of trying to find the rest that he'll just take Charlotte with them. "We don't want to be found."
I Saw a Cow!
Well, not yet. First Jack has to find Charlotte's GPS transponder attached to Vincent. OK.
Somewhere in the Bahamas, Frank Lapidus drops a tiny airliner into an aquarium. He hears news on the TV about the finding of 815, and as the TV starts flaking out, a picture of the pilot's body (one Seth Norris) is shown. He starts bugging out, and calls the NTSB, and asks to speak with a supervisor. He tells the guy on the other end (who sounds suspiciously like Mr. Abaddon from last week) that it's not the pilot, he's not wearing his wedding ring. He knows because he was supposed to be flying 815. (ooooh.)
Frank crawls up an embankment on the island, to find your typical cow (with cowbell!), they exchange stares for a bit, and the cow turns and walks away. His GPS phone is busted, so he fires a flare.
Charlotte sees it, and wants to go after it. "No," Locke tells her, and she takes a bullet in the chest. From Ben. I guess he's pilfered Karl's piece at some point. Locke kneels over her, and she gasps for air. Did he heal her with his mystical island powers?! No, silly, its just her body armor! Sawyer yet again jumps on Ben.
Jack and Kate et al. finally run across Frank. "I saw a cow!" Turns out the bird didn't crash and is sitting rather peacefully at the bottom of the embankment. Sweet! They all look obvsiously hopeful at this point....
The Mission
Ah, now here's where things start to come together. Well, at least a couple of pieces. We find none other than Mr. Abaddon talking to Naomi about "the mission." "What if there are survivors of 815" "There were no survivors" "But what if?"
There's something about all the members of the team being selected for specific reasons, and that they're all being hired to do a specific job, with Naomi apparently leading them.
Back on the island, Sayid is checking out the Huey. Miles calls back to the ship and gets Regina(?) this time. Minkowski is tied up, apparently with something important. (Wonder what?) and Frank learns that Juliet is a "native." "Where is he?" Miles chimes in. "Who?" "This man." and he whips out a photo of Ben. "Benjamin Linus."
Speaking of, Sawyer's got a gun pointed at Ben's head. Locke tells him in a Ben-like fashion, "It's my mess, I'll clean it up." Just as Locke appears to do the deed, Ben starts going on again about answers. Locke tries to coax the "monster secret" out him, but instead gets another startling revelation.
Ben knows all about Charlotte. Everything. And everything about the rest of the boat crew. He even knows that they're out to get *him.*
How does he know all this? "I have a man on their boat."
*BONK*
Well, there you have it. Be sure to check the analysis which'll be right up shortly.
