LOST: The Constant [ANALYSIS]

Is anyone else just totally in shock after that?  After last week's ho-hum (but still good) episode, they throw this at your head, and it hits with full force like a brick.  I'm still trying to make sense of it all.

But I'll start here.  Time travel, anchors, dead rats, night turning into day, dogs and cats living together.....  I've got some strange ideas about the things this episode tells us, so bear with me.

Desmond and His Flashes

OK, so we have got a (mostly) definitive answer to the question, "Why can Desmond apparently travel in time?"  Well, maybe not a "why" answer, but at least a "how" answer.  Due to some property of the island, in conjuction with the massive radiation spewed upon him by the Swan hatch implosion... he's gained the ability to randomly become "unstuck" in time.  ZOMGWTF! An actual, hardcore, touch-it-feel-it-smell-it, write it down ANSWER.  We don't get many of those, and it's kinda fun, isn't it?

But like all things LOST, we don't get an answer without adding more questions to the pool.  Such as why this is happening?  What's the mystical property of the island that causes this to happen?  And how was Faraday able to reproduce it in his lab.  Surely it's not only a result of radiation exposure?  If it were, there would be a lot more people affected by it, wouldn't you think?  And further...

...Why would it also affect inanimate objects, like incoming rockets bearing clocks, and helicopters?  There's more than meets the eye with this time travel business as it relates to the island.  Still a part of the equation that need explaining.

As an aside, there was a moment from the "Flashes" episode, in the pub, with a gent from Oxford if memory serves.  I really need to go back and check on that.  It's probably connected.

Minkowski

Well, did he die or not?  It wasn't real obvious.  If so he's got to be one of the most short lived important characters on the show!  (and you can ignore my previous post about him... ;-) Told ya I would be wrong!)

But seriously, where (and when) do you think he was heading off to in his 'unstuck' moments?  A ferris wheel?  London?  Maybe about the same time as Desmond's photo?  Hmmm....  Why, then, so close to Desmond?  Of course that's all blind speculation, but you have to wonder if he'll be showing up at some point in somebody's past.

And what of his final "Have to... get... back..." statement.  Did anyone think that was just a little too close to Jack's "We have to get back, Kate!" from last season's finale?  I'll hit on this  down the page a bit.

Billy

Ah, his army squadmate, Billy.  His immediate curiosity into Desmond's "dream" got me thinking.  What does he care?  Why would he ask him if he recognized anyone, or who else was on the boat?

My theory:  He's one of the "time lords" like Mrs. Hawking and the Friar.  But if you bring them back up, it calls into question the simplicity of Faraday's theory and experiments.  Who are these people and how are they able to interact with the timeline like they did?

The Black Rock

Now that was a shot out of the blue, wasn't it?  Is anyone else absolutely itching to know what's written in that journal?  And probably more important, why would Mr. Widmore want it so badly?  Connect the dots with the bottle of scotch.  I feel like we've been given a few more pieces to the puzzle here, but we still don't know where to put them.  How is Penny's pop connected to all of this?

Faraday's Constant

I don't think there's ever been a more ominous moment in LOST than that one.  Wonder what's going to happen to Faraday, and how Desmond will get dragged back into the time travelling fun.  Most important, how will that interaction change things?  We also see that it absolutely is possible to affect the future through these "unsticky" moments.

Ben's Man on the Boat

Well, its pretty clear that the secret Other on the ship lent Sayid and Desmond a hand, by cracking the door open.  Nice touch, and quite convenient, that.

Numbers

How many instances of "the LOST numbers" were there in this episode? Probably a record.

We Have to Get Back, Kate!!

OK, now here is where I go off the deep end.   What if (and this is a big one) the rest of the LOST-ies are being affected like this?  What if in the future, Jack has come to this troubling realization, and this is the reason for his meltdown?  The future as we've seen it, may not actually be the future, but rather the inter-connected leaps of them all getting "unstuck."

I mean, imagine the possibilities there!  What if they've not actually left the island, but are in some kind of 'unstuck' future, and they all (or maybe just Jack) are looking for "The Constant" to get them back?  You can put your heads back together now.

I really, really, like this idea.  And at the same time I hate it, because it is so mind-blowing.

And there you have it.  I honestly forgot the entirety of next weeks' preview, I was so blown away, and the mind was trying to rebuild itself....

It looks like they are going with some sort of String Theory scenario to me. Awesome awesome epi!

I believe they have just revealed the nature of Rousseau's disease. Since it is real, do you suppose the Dharma drug actually does something to help it?

Oh, nice! Didn't think of that angle. Maybe two big answers in one episode! Was that a pig flying by my window?! :-)

this may be just me, but wasn't minkowski one of hurley's fellow inmates at the mental hospital, in particular, the one he got the infamous numbers from?

Wooof!I think you are right about Hurley's asylum friend Banksy. I knew Minkowski looked familiar, although I spent 10 minutes trying to convince my SO that it wasn't Bobcat Goldthwait.

My hunch is that Mr. Whidmore is the "economist" that Saiid was looking for in Berlin, Ben's nemesis. He's too prominent and rich not to be connected high up in all this.

And am definately itching to see what's in the journal from the Black Rock, although it will probably be fairly innocuous when we get to it.

The asylum friend was most definitely NOT played by Fisher Stevens.

I've wondered if they are all each others 'constant' since each of them seem to intertwine with someone or all as shown in many flashbacks. Is that jazzy? ;-)
