LOST: Ji Yeon [RECAP]
Ugh, that writers' strike was a b--ch, no? I gotta be brutally honest, I was wholly unimpressed by Ji Yeon. This recap will reflect it. I took a lotta notes, but the more I think about it, the less important to the 'grand plan' this episode really seems to me.
Although the 'three-way' timeline was kind of interesting, although really you could see it coming.
Oh, and then there's that whole "who's on the boat?" thing. But yeah, we all saw that coming as well.

Um, where to start. Yeah, this is going to be short and to the point. I really don't think we need to belabor (hah!) all the minor details here. Because few if any are all that important. If anyone disagrees let me know which ones.
Oh, and there was a storm that rolled through last night, so I did miss a lot of the details as it was interfering with my reception of the digital signal. MPEG Blocks, stutters, and hiccups a plenty.
On the Island
Um, probably the most unsatisfying part of the show, so lets just knock it out of the way quickly. Ready?
Jin wants to talk baby names, and comes up with Ji Yeon. Sun doesn't want to, its bad luck. Sun is getting suspicious of Faraday and Charlotte's motives, and wants to defect to Locke's camp. Jin agrees to go with.
Kate gives them a map how to get to Locke, but as they're leaving, Juliet catches them, and tries to stop them. She tells Jin about Sun's affair, and Sun smacks her soundly. WHACK.
Jin storms off with the silent treatment. Bernard chimes in, and he and Jin wind up out on the water fishing. Bernard tells Jin about Rose, and how the island has given them a second chance. Karma. Jin catches a big ol' fish. "See? Karma!"
Juliet tells Sun that she had no choice, that she had to keep them on this side, so they could be rescued. Either that or she'd die. Stuff we already know, OK, yeah, where's the fast forward button.
Jin forgives Sun, brings her dinner. She's changed her mind. Everything's right with the world. Er, well in their tent at least.
On the Boat
Desmond and Sayid are being held captive and fed lima beans! Oh, the horrors! (I dunno I kinda like 'em!) Someone shoves a note through the vent in the door, "Don't Trust the Captain!." Anyway, Ol Doc Ray's gonna take them to see the captain.
Well, Regina apparently must have the time-traveler flu, as when she's done reading her upside down book (didn't catch the title) she straps on an anchor chain and walks off the side. Desmond and Sayid start yelling for someone to help, but no-one does. The Captain appears and tells everyone to hold their stations. He introduces himself as Captain Gault. Oh, and Frank's taken off with the helicopter. On "an errand."
Well, Gault spills to Desmond about Widmore's involvement. Surprises all around. He takes them below (or above?) to his cabin, where he pulls out a flight data recorder. It's from the other Flight 815 wreckage. He remarks about the amount of resources needed to pull off such a grand scale of a fakery. "Where do you find 324 dead bodies? That's just one of the reasons we want Benjamin Linus."
Desmond and Sayid get escorted by the Doc down to a different room. Doc opens the door, the roaches scurry away and there's a big head-shot blood splatter on the wall. The Doc gets pissed and yells for the dude mopping the floor to come clean it up. He pushes the mop and bucket down the hall.
Yup, its Michael, our long absent castaway. Or is it Kevin Johnson? Sayid and Desmond are obviously shocked, but play along.
In the future...or is it the past...
Sun's having the baby! Woo! She's no longer on the island, so it becomes immediately obvious that she's the last of the Oceanic Six to be revealed. But wait! There's more!
We're shown Jin, back in Korea also! He gets a phone call, and rushes to a toy store to pick up a stuffed Panda. He pulls a Keystone Cop and has to go back for another one. He makes a deal with the shop keeper to get the last one and rushes off to the hospital.
Sun, in the throes of labor, cries out for Jin, he's not there. The doctors and nurses don't seem too interested in calling him. Hm. Baby's born, natch, its a girl.
Jin arrives at the hospital. Well a hospital, anyway. He gets to a room guarded by some guy. Wait, this isn't Sun's room! Something about an ambassador and Mr. Paik. It's a boy. OK, so this is Jin in the past! Oooh. Anyone with six fingers could have figured that out by now! If he'd made it off the island that would have been seven, unless we're not counting Aaron, which would be plain silly...and...
Well, flash forward a bit more, to Sun at home with the baby. There's a knock at the door. Hurley's showed up to see the baby! (So is he out of the looney bin or does this happen before?)
They go to the cemetary to talk to Jin. His headstone reads 2004, so they're still playing the 'everyone else died in the crash' game, I take it.
Of course, she named the baby Ji Yeon, and says something else that (curse you storm!) got garbled up on me!
Apart from the "twist" with the Jin's past and Sun's future, I have to re-proclaim my overall disappointment with how things are rolling out. Apart from Desmond's adventures, and a few brief shockers, this season is starting to feel a bit like a soap opera or something.
But, if I recall, that's how last season started off as well. And look what happened after the break! I'm hoping that when we get there I'll be able to go, "AHA! I get it all now!"
I will touch on some of the details I glossed over in the analysis thread, coming right quick.

Jin is dead.
I am not sure Aaron is considered one of the Oceanic 6, since he was not passenger on the plane. If I recall correctly, in the Kate episode, they said 8 people sruvived the crash, and 6 made it off the island. I assume part of the lies are that Claire died in child birth on the island. I would also assume that if they can say Sun conceived on the island, then the 8th survivor would have been Jin, in the lies scenario.
Sun was not speaking to the grave as someone who was in hiding or still on the island or somebody she had a falling out with. She was speaking as a grieving widow, telling her dead husbands grave about her daughter.
Excellent episode, I would say second best this season.
The flash forward/flash back was excellent. You did not expect it and did not see it coming.
Yes we did see Michael coming, but they always said Michael would be back. The surprise is that he is still working for BEn and still being used by Ben. What an idiot.
This season has been a great season and whoever it is that writes the comments sometimes annoys me because he doesn't see the connection.
The Desmond episode was the best episode and will prove to be one of the most important episodes. Desmond has all ready proved to be one of the most important characters.
I do like the introduction of Faraday and Ben is a genius. Never underestimate him. He always knows what's going on way before anyone else.
I just think that the episodes so far this season have been far too 'mechanical' in terms of only taking care of plot-related business. The freighter, the time-traveling, certain answers that we've all been anticipating...
... but the thing that's been lacking so far this season is the flashback/forward character stories, the "morality play" aspect of LOST that makes it something different. I've yet to see an episode this season which goes there. Think Locke and his beliefs, tying back to his days in the commune. Eko having to face his demons, Or Sun lying to her father about breaking the Glass Ballerina, and having to deal with the consequences, and her similar situation on the island. Desmond's cowardice, Jack's trying to overcome his failures, Charlie's "Greatest Hits"... See where I'm going?
The way those episodes tied the characters' past and events back to the 'on island present' was just some great writing. And I just don't see it. The character aspect of the show seems to be lacking this time around.
Is this intentional? A product of the writers' strike? Maybe they're trying to go after a different audience? Just getting important plot points out of the way? Dunno.
Just my opinion. Don't get me wrong, it's still great stuff, and I'm eating it up.
We have been switched to some flashforwards now which I, personally, like because it shows the aftermaths of the island. It's the before and after effect. And that the island is still controlling them in some way.
Every season takes us into a new direction and it usually takes a few episodes for us to get used to it then they hit us with something big and we love it again. Every season has been like that except maybe the second season which started off with a bang and was held almost all throughout.
