Just like Part 2, I'm going to go in 'episode time' rather than separate the stories.
We now return to the continuing stooory of how the Oceanic Six came to be off the island. Stay tuned, folks, it only gets better from here! Click through to read the recap for part 3. This is going to be good.
Just like Part 2, I'm going to go in 'episode time' rather than separate the stories.
It's night. There's a man sitting in a car. Someone knocks on the window. "Excuse me sir, do you have the time?" "Sure, its 8:!5" BLAM BLAM. Sayid shoots him and takes off, past the big "Santa Rosa Mental Asylum" sign.
Inside, Hurley's playing chess by himself. Sayid enters. "Hi." Hurley says matter-of-factly. "I think visiting hours are over, dude." "I want you to come with me, somewhere safe." "Why would I go anywhere with you?" "Because circumstances have changed. Bentham's dead. Two days ago. They said it was suicide."
"Why are you calling him Bentham?" "Don't say it! We're being watched!" "Dude, I'm having conversations with dead people, and you sound like the paranoid one." "I just killed a guy outside, I find paranoia keeps me alive."
"We're not coming back, are we?" Sayid says nothing as they start to leave. Hurley turns around and moves one last piece on the board.
"Checkmate, Mr. Eko."
......
On the helicopter, their situation has not improved. With less than five minutes of fuel remaining, Hurley finally spots the freigther....
......
In The Orchid, Locke is trying to keep Keamy alive. "Ben! Help! If he dies everyone on the boat dies!" "That's not my problem, John." Keamy starts to talk, "Wherever you go, Widmore..." "Not if I find him first," Ben replies. Keamy passes on (with a nice "Death Rattle" I might add) and his device goes from green to red.
......
As does the detonator on the ship. Michael and Jin look at each other. "You need to go, NOW! There's maybe five minutes left in the tank!" Desmond heads up top. "I stay," Jin says as they keep freezing the battery.
Desmond gets above only to find the chopper inbound. "Oh bloody hell!" He tries to wave them off to no avail. We flash frantically between Frank trying to fuel up the helicopter and patch the hole, and Michael and Jin still working on the bomb. Sun gets off to go after Jin, but Jack sends her back, and abandons the idea altogether. They get back on the chopper and lift off.
Jin runs out, but its too late, the chopper has left, Desmond included, with Sun yelling to go back for Jin. "We need to go back!"
Down below, Michael hears some whispers, and turns around to find Christian Shepard standing there. "You can go now, Michael." "Who are you?"
The freighter explodes, and quickly sinks. (RIP Michael and Jin)
Jack finally manages to calm down Sun after she witnesses the explosion. They only have enough fuel to get back to the island.
.....
Flash forward to London. Sun is there. Her phone rings, its her mother, who is watching young Ji Yeon. Just then Richard Widmore comes out of the building. She hangs up.
"Excuse me, Mr. Widmore. I'm Sun Kwan, managing director of Paik industries." They exchange some pleasantries about her father, apparently Widmore knows him quite well.
"Are you really going to pretend you don't know who I am? You know. Just like you know where we were and what happened to us. You and I have common interests," she hands him her business card, "When you're ready to discuss them you call me. We're not the only ones who left the island."
"Why would you want to help me?"
..........
Ben admits to letting his emotions get the better of him. He starts messing with the myriad of switches and buttons. "If I were you I'd duck." The vault explodes inside, and the room goes dark. "I'd better change," Ben says.
.............
Juliet sits on the beach, drinking something that doesn't look like water. She sees something in the water. It's Sawyer.
"Nice day for a swim!" He says with that silly smile on his face. "I thought I'd take a dip! You look like you're celebrating."
"No." He turns around to see what she's staring at, and on the horizon is the smoke plume from the freighter. "That our boat?" "It was."
......
Ben gets the Parka on, which we saw him wearing in "Things to Come." "What's that for?" "I'm going somewhere cold." "Where's mine?" "You're not going."
"Jacob told you what to do, but didn't tell you how to do it. He wants me to suffer the consequences. Whoever leaves the island can never come back. Richard and my people are upstairs, they will follow your every word. Sorry I made your life so miserable, John." "What do I tell them to do?"
"You'll find your way, John. You always do."
.....
Locke approaches the Others who are gathered near the greenhouse. "Welcome home," Richard Alpert tell him, as he stands looking rather Col. Kurtz like over his new tribe.
......
Ben enters the vault, and goes through the new hole blown in the side. There is a cave, which leads to a pit, with some stone tablet-looking things next to it. He heads down the ladder, towards a brightly lit, purplish spot at the bottom. It turns out to be ice, which he kicks out. He goes through this hole into another cave, this one covered in ice. He falls off the ladder and injures his arm. He then lights a lantern that's been left there. We see something in the wall, it looks like a large wooden wheel with spokes coming out of it.
"I hope you're happy now, Jacob."
After much pushing and beating with the crowbar he's brought with him, he starts to turn it. A low hum begins, a sound we've heard before, at the Swan Hatch. On Faraday's boat they hear it, Juliet and Sawyer hear it, even on the helicopter they hear it.
The from behind the wheel a yellow light starts to get brighter, then turn white, as it engulfs Ben who's started to cry. It gets brighter and engulfs everyone on the island, on Faraday's boat, and turns slightly purple like when the Swan imploded.
From the helicopter, we can see the island through the haze of the light, and then in a flash, it disappears, leaving only a small ripple on the surface.
"Where the hell's the island?!" "It's gone!" They run out of fuel, and start going in. Desmond tosses a raft out, and they crash into the ocean. (Again!)
They all come through OK, except for Desmond. After pulling him into the raft, and Jack giving him CPR, he finally comes around. They are stranded, in the middle of open ocean. "It's OK, we're alive," Jack says.
....
The phone starts ringing. Kate turns on the light and answers it. Only whispers come from the other side. Fearing the worst, she gets a rather large pistol, loads it, and goes to Aaron's room. She opens the door and points the gun at the woman sitting by Aaron's bed. "Don't move! Don't you touch my son!"
The woman turns around. It's Claire. Kate lowers the gun and manages to stammer out, "How?!"
"Don't bring him back, Kate. Don't you dare bring him back."
She wakes up, for real this time, and goes to Aaron. "I'm sorry" she tells him.
......
"It's a miracle, I can't believe he did it! Locke! He moved the island!" Hurley exclaims on the raft. Hurley and Jack argue about what just happened, when Frank sees something.
"God almighty there is a boat!" They all start shouting and the boat turns its searchlights on them, and starts getting closer.
Jack realizes what must happen. "We're going to have to lie. About everything." He explains to the group the reasons why, just like Locke told him. "Just let me do the talking."
The ship gets closer, and we can here people talking it what sounds like some sort of Scandinavian tongue. On one of the upper decks, Penelope Widmore appears. (This is Penny's Boat!)
Desmond sees her, and they have their long awaited reunion. "How did you find me?" "Your phone call, I have a tracking station." "I love you, Penny, and I'll never leave you again." Desmond introduces everyone from the raft, with Jack being the last. "We need to talk" he tells her.
....
One week later, still on Penny's boat. They've arrived at the island of Mimbata, which is where the Oceanic six's phony story starts. They use a raft from the ship to row of towards shore. All except Desmond and Frank.
"Are you sure about this, brother?" Desmond asks Jack. "Are you sure?" "As long as I've got Penny I'll be fine." "Don't let him find you, Desmond. I'll see you in another life brother," Jack tells him. "Aye, I guess you will."
And they take off towards rescue.
...........
Bearded, drunk Jack, is racing off in his Bronco, fresh after leaving Kate (or her leaving him) outside the airport. He arrives at the funeral parlor, where the mystery coffin was. He breaks in, and finds the casket. He picks up the clipbard on top. The paper reads, "Jeremy Bentham." He opens it, and stares inside.
"Hello, Jack." A voice from behind him says, startling Jack. He turns around to see Benjamin Linus.
"Did he tell you I was off the island?" "Yes he did." He questions Jack about when he and Kate last saw Bentham, and what he said.
"He told me that after I left the island, some bad things happened. That it was my fault for leaving. He said I had to come back."
"I heard that you've been flying on passenger planes, hoping that you'd crash. That's dark, Jack, very dark. I'm here to tell you that the island won't let you come alone.
"All of you have to go back."
"Are you... Sayid, I don't even know where Sayid is, Sun blames me for Jin's death..." Jack starts rambling incoherently... "Kate won't even talk to me anymore."
"Perhaps I can help you with that. This is the way it has to be, Jack. You have to do it together. All of you."
"How?"
"I have a few ideas." Jack nods, knowing that he's going to have to work with Ben. He starts to leave, but Ben stops him.
"Jack, I said all of you. We're going to have to bring him, too."
The camera slowly pans over the top of the casket to reveal the identity of the mysterious Jeremy Bentham.
It's John Locke.
BONK.

Jeremy Bentham was an English philosopher who disagreed with that concept entirely.
