LOST: LaFleur

Argh! No time for recaps today, folks! But I'll rundown the main observances...  And, brother, what an episode!

The Statue

Lets just get this out of the way right now. Yay! The statue! Well, almost.  The back side of it anyway.  It almost sorta kinda looks like Egyptian style, which led me to the following comparison...

Horace vs. Horus

Yeah, I'm still working on this one... stay tuned.  The glyph for Horus also showed up when the timer in the Swan expired....  oooo.  I started looking into this last night, and discovered a few tidbits, none of which probably matter.... but....

Horace Goodspeed returns as the de facto leader of the DHARMA initiative on the island in, IIRC, 1974.  So, we can only assume that our heroes have landed at the same time young(er) Ben is on the island.

Mr. LaFleur, er I mean Sawyer

How's that for a WTF?!  The whole gang seems to have found a way into DHARMA during the whole "3 yrs later" period.  Wow.  Unfortunately there's still no good gory details on how that all took place.

Speaking of Younger Ben

OK, so our gang has spent three years on the island circa '74, and they didn't come across a younger Ben yet?  I'm doing the math in my head, and either he hasn't arrived yet (which doesn't make sense) or they just haven't got to this part of the story.  I don't recall if any exact dates were given for Ben's arrival, but he was old enough during the upcoming "purge" that he'd be recognizable, and had been there for several years already....  Don't leave this part hanging, guys!

The Star?

Anyone notice the star in everyone's DHARMA patches?  It looks like there may be a new station to contend with, at least I didn't recognize that place.  Didn't appear to be The Flame, but I could be wrong.

It's a Boy!

But who is this youngster?  The offspring of Horace Goodspeed and Amy NoName.  I can't even hazard a guess, nothing is coming to mind.

More puzzling is the fact that the big "something" has yet to happen which renders any future births from happening.  We've now seen two, three if you count Alex, babies born on the island, which we know can't happen in 2004 island time....

Charlotte

OK, so maybe Faraday isn't Charlotte's father...  Blast!  Maybe he gets involved with her mother somehow? Or just takes a fetching to her in a time-travelly "I know the future" sort of way?

Richard and Sawyer

How about the look on Richard's face when Sawyer asked him about the bomb, and told him about Locke?  Man, the game just changed there.  Sawyer may have given everyone some more time, but at what cost?  He just laid his cards out on the table bigtime.

Juliet and Sawyer

Ah, but the real meat of things lies here, in the fact that Sawyer and Juliet seem to have a thing going in the 3 yrs forward era.  "How long does it take to get over someone...."  About three years it would seem.  And then Freckles returns.  It has a bit of a soapish taste to it but I'm willing to roll with it.

Will Juliet leave the island now that Kate has returned?  I guess it depends on what Sawyer does.

Ankh

Referring of course to "Paul's" necklace.  Any ties back to the encroaching Egyptian theme? The "temple" where Smokey hides out, the statue, the exit in Tunisia, and now this.  Curiouser and  curiouser.

The Black Rock

Anyone here believe Horace when he denies any knowledge of "The Black Rock?"  I didn't think so.

Sun and Sayid

still no sign of them, but from the previews it looks like we'll find out in two weeks! along with a slightly familiar face if you followed any of the Hanso bits from a few years prior.

Like I said, sorry I don't have time to put a recap together right now...

The new baby isnt an offspring of Paul and Amy, only of Horace and Amy :-) Paul died 3 years beforehand.

Who are the 3 babies...I count Alex and the one last night as being born pre-2004. So who is the third? Clair's baby was born 2004.

All we know about dead babies is that "in the modern time" Others who conceive on the island die during delivery on the island. This might be punishment for the Others "losing their way."

The Statue-my first thought was Anubis- as per some research:Over the course of time, Anubis "became considered more the gatekeeper and ruler of the underworld, the "Guardian of the veil" (of "death"). Consequently, he was said to protect souls as they journeyed there, and thus be the patron of lost souls." But-after really looking at that statue-there are definitely some hips showing...indicating a female form..thus we may have a statue of Taweret-she is the Egyptian goddess of fertility; also the protector of pregnancy and childbirth. Juliet told Sun that men on the island were extra fertile. Sawyer mentioned to Juliet that whatever bad thing that caused the death of expecting mothers and their children may not have happened yet. I think that the 'Jughead' finally exploded-taking the statue with it...I think that the baby is Ethan...we heard/saw Juliet speak to "Amelia" at the book club...Amy is the young Amelia. Many have speculated that Amy is Amelia Earheart-google this name: some VERY intersting stuff there!

Did the Richard/Sawyer encounter rock or what! I LOVED it!!!

Finally-Horace may/may not know about the Black Rock...Richard is keeping the Dharma folks on a very short leash! and your thoughts?

Sorry, the statue does NOT resemble Anubis. Look at the ears. Even wearing pharaohonic headgear, Anubis's ears stick up much higher. Someone on Lostpedia suggested Sekhmet, but when Sekhmet wears her flat-topped headdress, she is also wearing the nemes headdress, and so her ears would not be visible from behind.

However I DO believe it is Egyptian. Notice the "kilt" and one leg is slightly in front of the other. Distinctive marks of ancient Egyptian statuary.

I tend to agree, I don't think it was a statue of Anubis either. Something perhaps even greek/roman influenced because Tunisia is the former 'Carthage'. When the Oceanic group came across the statue originally, they made it a point to say it had 4 toes. The foot alone looks almsot greek/roman. Interesting thing I found however... the Egyptian god 'Seth' killed his brother Osiris, and battled his nephew 'Horus' to be ruler of the living.

... or what about a Phoenician god, they are more influence in Tunisia/Carthage... in particular 'Baal Hammon" who parallels Amun Ra, in ancient tims Carthinians often sacrified their first born chaild to him (maybe he's pissed now and taking the first born children), he is also the god of fertility.

Remember the picture Hurley was drawing in "the Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham" episode? It was a sphynx (with what looked like someone dragging the Ark of the Covenant in front of). Set was an egyptian god that had long jackyl like ears that was the god of Chaos. Maybe that was who we were seing from behind?

Comment on timeline of island. A young Charlotte waved at Daniel. Was this actually Charlotte and in 1974? According to Ben in season 4 Charlotte was born July 2,1979 in Essex, England to David and Jeanette Lewis. She claims she was born on the island. Was Ben's info true or a lie by her parents to protect the island?
