LOST: Dead is Dead

How about tonight for a mind-bender, eh?  Take a lot of what you know, or think you know, and chuck it.  The recap is a little tricky, as we did a lot of bouncing around in Ben-world, but I think we can get it straight....

Richard brings the injured young Ben into the camp after taking him to the temple.  A longer-haired man is there, and confronts him.  "What have you done?" "The island chooses who the island chooses."  This man goes into the tent and talks to Ben.  Ben wants to stay with them, but this man refuses.  He tells Ben, "just because you're living with them doesn't mean you're not one of us."  He tells him that the island saved his life for a reason.  Who is this man?  "I'm Charles, Charles Widmore."

Forward to post-crash II, with Locke sitting over Ben.  "Hello, Ben."  The familiar voice wakes Ben with a shake, and an obvious state of shock.  "Welcome back to the land of the living."  He's surprised to see Locke, but he isn't.  At least that's what he's saying.  He tells Locke that he's come back to be judged, to answer for what he's done.  "By Whom?" "You don't even have a word for it.  I believe you call it the monster."

The other survivors are fishing a large cargo container out of the water and onto the beach.  Alaina, Caesar, and a new face among them.  Ben walks past them, and they have an odd conversation about Locke, and Ben moves on.  Ben tries to plant doubts about Locke, as if he were the new Ethan.  Caesar pulls out the sawed-off and tells Ben he's got his back.

Backwards again to a different time.  An older-young Ben (you have a better word for it?!) and a young boy are in the jungle, hunting or something.  "You want me to do it? I can do it if you want me to?" "Stay here and shut up, Ethan."  Ben draws a pistol and heads off towards a beach encampment.  It becomes clear that this is Rousseau's hut.  Ben enters and she goes for the gun, but is stopped by Ben.  "You're the one who infected us, aren't you?"  The music box falls to the floor.  Instead of taking Rousseau, Ben grabs the baby, and warns her to never follow him or look for him.  And every time she hears whispers she should run.

He takes the baby back to the camp, where a much older Charles Widmore expects to find that Ben's killed Rousseau.  Instead he's presented the young Alex, and orders Ben to kill the baby instead.  Ben refuses, and tells Charles to do it himself, which he doesn't.

Ben is back at the Hyrda, rummaging through a desk.  Locke comes in, and wants to talk about the "elephant in the room."  Ben goes off about killing Locke, and how it was in the best interests of the island, and, and.... Locke grins, "I was just hoping for an apology."

Locke offers to help Ben in his mission to be judged, and they head off to the canoes.  They're confronted by Caesar and a couple of others.  Locke tries to talk them down, but finally insists on taking the boat.  Caesar goes to grab the gun from his bag.  "Looking for this?" Ben says, and then he shoots Caesar with it.  The two put the boat in the water.  "Consider that your apology."

They finally hitch up at the dock, which hasn't changed since we saw it last.  They go to Ben's old house, and its revealed that the real reason for Ben to be judged is for getting Alex killed.  A light comes on in the house, in Alex's room.  The two cautiously enter, and find Sun.  Frank comes in a second later.  Locke's newfound life is revealed to Sun, and Locke says he knows how to find Jin.  Frank doesn't want any of it and takes off back to the plane.

Ben takes off on his mission, through the closet, the stone door, and through a tunnel.  At the end of the tunnel is a pool of muddy water.  He fishes around in it for something, and finally pulls the plug.  The water drains out revealing a small basin with the hole at the bottom.  He leans over, "I'll be outside."  And turns to leave again.

Flash back again, to Ben and a young Alex playing on the swings.  Richard approaches and tells Ben that the sub is leaving.  "You don't have to see him off."  "Yes I do."

Widmore is being lead to the sub in handcuffs.  "I came to say goodbye." "No you came to gloat."  "You brought this on yourself, you had a daughter with an outsider.  I'd sacrifice anything to protect the island." "No you wouldn't, not Alex." "You wanted her dead, not the island." "I hope you're right."  "I'll be seeing you, boy," and turns back to the sub.

Ben comes out of the house, Sun is sitting on the porch.  She thinks Jack knew about Locke, but Ben informs her that wasn't the case, and she figures it out.  Ben also reveals that Locke's resurrection has him scared.  Locke appears out of the jungle, and knows where to find the monster.....  They prepare some torches and head off into the jungle.

Return back to the LA docks, and we find Ben making another phone call.  This time to Charles, warning him he's off to kill his daughter.

They continue on through the jungle, this time the tables have turned between Locke and Ben.  They come to the temple wall.  Rather than go in, Locke decides he and Ben will go under, through the hole.  "If you ever get off the island, Sun, find Desmond, and tell him I'm sorry.  He'll know."

Ben finds Penny on the boat, but before he can get there, Desmond stops him.  He shoots Des and continues on.  Just as he's about to fire on Penny, little Charlie comes up and distracts him long enough for Des to thrash him soundly and dump him into the water....

Frank returns to the other island, and encounters Alaina and the other guy with some new-found weapons.  "What lies in the shadow of the statue?" They ask him.  When he can't answer they rifle-butt him, and take him prisoner...

Down in the caves under the temple, Ben and Locke discuss matters relating to Alex, when suddenly the floor gives way, putting Ben another level below.  He gets up and enters a room full of Egyptian symbols and images, complete with pillars and the works.  At one wall is an altar, with more images resembling Anubis, and a stone with several holes in it.

Smoke starts pouring from the holes, and surrounds Ben.  He's shown several images of the past relating to Alex, including her death.  Then the smoke retreats into the holes again.  His torch relights.  "Daddy?"  Alex appears behind him, he tries to apologize, but instead this Alex puts him up against one of the pillars.  "I know you're already planning to kill John again, if you touch him I will hunt you down and destroy you.  Listen and follow his every order."  Ben swears to do this, and then Alex is gone again.

Locke sees Ben appear again, this time looking quite defeated and distraught.  Locke throws down a rope, and Ben says, quite disappointed, "It let me live."

BONK.

K, well, there you have it.  Still doesn't explain what the monster is, but only serves to muddy the waters even further.  Things are taking on a decidedly supernatural nature, and I have a sinking feeling some sort of plot-device is in our future.....  We shall see.....

The Temple and the Monster

Like I said, more questions, few answers.  Exactly what is smokey?  We get to see him at work the same way he worked on Mr. Eko, but the outcome was decidely different.

I think I'll leave it up to you to talk about ;)  I mean, I'm totally not even going there at the moment.  Smoke pouring out of holes in the ground in some ancient Egyptian (looking) place is a bit beyond me now.

In the Shadow of the Statue

Eh? What?  Not even going to guess.  Clearly though Alaina is working for Widmore, and that's probably not good.

Et tu, Ben?

So Caesar is dead?  That didn't last long.  Was he in on it with Alaina or just a bit too smart for his own good?  I guess we'll never know.

Ben, Ben, Ben

Speaking of Ben, anyone else get the feeling that he expected, nay, wanted the monster to kill him?  Hopefully there'll be some sort of amazing tipping point for Ben, when he finally realizes he's been a bastard his entire life and actually turns for the better.  Of course that'll probably be right before he's killed....

Locke

How does Locke know so much about the monster now?  Is Ben truly scared of him now?

Not sure what else to say about this episode.  Still more in the 'rush the plot along' category.

I think that Smokey is Jacob. Smokey clearly morphs into whatever form it wants. I for one, am kinda glad they are going back to this, because for a while it seemed that they let go of the supernatural element and the polar bears and crazy thrashing in the jungle etc. I think that Ben was very scared of Smokey, and although he feels great remorse over Alex, really had no intention of going to the Temple. John seems to be forcing his hand. John only knew where the monster lived because while he was flashing in an out of time before he left, he saw the monster take Rousseau and her folks to the temple.

Wasn't it Jin who was w/ Rousseau not John?

I thought the biggest surprise in the episode was that Sun showed the picture of the rest of the 'Oceanic 6' to Ben and he was genuinely shocked to see them in the 1970s era.

My other thing is, where are the other Oceanic people?! That is driving me a bit batty!

YES! on the 'where the hell is everyone else?' bit. Richard and the other-others should be somewhere on the island too, but when exactly they've not said. This has been driving me nuts, as especially Richard should be someplace running into himself by now. >_

Word is, they will be back, with Vincent. I also hear we will finally get to 'see' jacob... I agree I think its jacob's spirit too (the 'monster'). I'm also beginning to wonder if that wonderful eyeliner that Alpert wears... is because he is Eqyptian? lol
